MPS PLASTIC & PHOENIX TOGETHER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
The PHOENIX group, whose headquarter is located in Mannheim, is the European leader in pharmaceutical wholesales, pharmacy retail, and services for the pharmaceutical industry. With its presence in 29 healthcare markets, the company offers unique geographical coverage throughout Europe, making a vital contribution to comprehensive healthcare with more than 45.000 employees.
Pharmaceutical wholesales, with its unique area coverage throughout Europe, represents the core business of the company. In a total of 29 countries, PHOENIX supplies pharmacies, doctors, and medical facilities with medicines and healthcare products through more than 224 sites in the business areas pharmaceutical wholesale and pre-wholesale. Millions of people throughout Europe can rely on their services every day. Moreover, PHOENIX operates over 3.200 of its own pharmacies in 17 European countries, where more than 195 million people per year receive medicines but also competent pharmaceutical counselling.

Starting from 2021, the company has launched a project of sustainable growth and in the last SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2021-2022 stated that in the future fast all its containers will be made of recycled plastic.
Within this project, MPS Plastic plays an important role, as supplier but also as partner supporting the project.

MPS PLASTIC IN THE MIDDLE OF THE “BEST PRACTICE EXAMPLES FROM THE PHOENIX COUNTRIES”

In the last report 2021-2022, PHOENIX launched a new sustainability agenda, which focuses on five main topics:

  • Climate action

  • Circular economy

  • Responsible supply chains

  • Diversity

  • Equal opportunities

  • Community engagement

A decisive step of the project considers that all containers made with recycling material will replace the traditional ones made in virgin plastic within all PHOENIX sites. Once this conversion has taken place, the PHOENIX group plans to save overall 750 tons of plastic per year.

The Italian branch Comifar, situated in Novate Milanese and belonging to the PHOENIX group, was the first launching this project in collaboration with MPS Plastic and all its containers, which have been purchased in 2021, are made of 100% recycled plastic. This conversion allowed to recover 11 tons of plastic from the environment in just one year. Based on this model, four other branches of the group successfully tested this approach and the relative procedures for the conversion have been initiated.

THE ADDED VALUE OF MPS PLASTIC

For over 15 years MPS Plastic has developed an internal department, which is hyper-specialised in the conversion of products from virgin plastic to recycling plastic. Experience, technologies, methodologies, manufacturing processes and a supply chain focused on the injection moulding with recycled plastic are provided every day to companies and multinational corporations leader in the pharmaceutical, automotive, and industrial design industries.

In the specific case of the PHOENIX group, the contribution of MPS Plastic is not limited to the only function of production, but assumes a consulting character, which extends to all elements of the conversion project. Indeed, the partnership is across-the-board and comprehends the activities of reverse engineering, prototyping, mould production, testing on the automatization lines, verification of the operating comfort, wear control, and monitoring of the life cycle of a product.

Thanks to the model offered from MPS Plastic, PHOENIX could focus in just one supplier all the main activities of the project, cancelling the organisational conflicts and optimizing the transformation process.

All this has turned into an efficient and rapid transformation process to sustainable recycling materials, without any impact on the productivity. The final purpose that PHOENIX and MPS Plastic set themselves is indeed the production and, consequently, the employment of containers made of 100% recycling plastic throughout all PHOENIX sites.

Therefore, it can be finally said that the use of recycled plastic represents a fundamental step for MPS Plastic, toward the achievement of a single but essential purpose: to guarantee the customer an impeccable service, always considering the impact on the environment, for a sustainable future.
